Stockholm Shore Excursions

Royal Palace (Kungliga Slottet)

Royal Palace (Kungliga Slottet)

The Royal Palace is the official residence of the Swedish monarchy. See the opulent Royal Apartments, then visit three fascinating museums: the Treasury with the crown jewels, the Kronor Museum which details Sweden’s medieval history, and Gustav III’s museum of antiquities. At noon you can check out military precision at the changing of the guard. The Royal Palace is located on the east bank of Gamla Stan.

Stortorget

Stortorget

At the heart of Gamla Stan stands Stortorget, the oldest square in Stockholm. Surrounded by a series of beautiful medieval buildings, it vivdly brings to life the middle-ages. The square was the site of the Stockholm Bloodbath in 1520, when many Swedish nobles were slaughtered by instigation of the Danish King. Stop at one of the many cafes to 'fika' like a local.

Nobel Museum

Nobel Museum

The Nobel Museum showcases the works of Nobel Prize Laureates. Follow the 20th century advances made possible by their creative and inspirational work. Pick up a souvenir at the Giftshop. The museum is situated beside Stortorget.

Västerlånggatan

Västerlånggatan

Running north-south through the heart of Gamla Stan is Västerlånggatan, the main tourist thoroughfare. It’s a historic street lined by some of the most interesting buildings in Stockholm. The shops sell a wide variety of souvenirs and trinkets.

Vasa Museum

Vasa Museum

At the Vasa Museum you’ll see an impressive reclaimed Swedish warship that sank on its maiden voyage in 1628 and was salvaged over 300 years later. Walk along the 4 viewing levels around the ship, then inspect a host of fascinating side exhibits. The Vasa Museum is situated on Djurgården island just across from Gamla Stan. One way to reach the Vasa is to take the short water taxi ride from Slussen (just along from Stadsgården).
