5 Things To Do In St Croix For Cruisers
Fort Frederik was constructed in 1760 by the Danish to provide a center of Dutch power in the region – the fort is named after the Danish king, Frederik V, who bought the island from the French in 1754. It’s possible to walk rights around the ramparts, taking in the magnificent views across the sea. There’s also a small museum featuring exhibits detailing the history of the island. The fort is located next to the cruise ship pier.
Sand Castle Beach
A mile south of Frederiksted pier you’ll find beautiful Sand Castle beach beach, a wide stretch of soft sand shelving gently into the azure Caribbean sea. It’s an ideal place to while away a lazy day, stirring occasionally for a swim or snorkel. Facilities include sun lounger and beach umbrella hire, and there’s a convenient beach bar behind the sand.
Cruzan Rum Distillery
The famous Cruzan Rum Distillery has been making quality rum since 1760. Tour the distillation factory, see the big fermenting tanks, visit the old windmill, watch coopers at work, and finally drink a small glass of the liquid gold! The distillery is on the outskirts of Frederiksted.
Estate Whim Plantation
Estate Whim Plantation, founded when St Croix was still under the rule of the French, is the best preserved sugar plantation in the Virigin Islands. Tour the Great House, a restored windmill, the sugar factory ruins and the plantation gardens. It’s a 10 minute taxi ride from the cruise ship pier to the plantation.
Two miles out to sea from Christiansted sits picturesque Buck Island. The island’s reefs provide a habitat to an amazing variety of colorful underwater life. Especially exciting is the snorkeling trail on the eastern side of the island, where informative signs help guide you around some of the most interesting sights of this marine world. Buck Island is a popular shore excursion.
