Nawiliwili (Kauai) Shore Excursions

Kalapaki Beach

Kalapaki Beach

Kalapaki Beach is a lovely long curve of sandy beach with good swimming and boogie boarding. Swaying palm trees fringe the back of the beach, providing welcome shade on a hot day. Near by stands the expansive Marriott Beach Resort, but the beach is wide enough to ensure it never feels too busy. Kalapaki Beach and the close by shopping centers are the only attractions within walking distance of the cruise port. To go further afield, the only real option is to hire a car, or join a ship excursion.

Wailua Falls

Wailua Falls

There are many beautiful waterfalls in Kauai, but many are high up in the mountains, completely inaccessible to the visitor. But Wailua Falls, just a couple of miles from Lihu’e, is both beautiful and easy to get to. There’s a viewpoint on the road just by the falls, or the fit and sure-footed can hike a trail into the pool beneath the falls for a swim. (The easiest trail starts about a quarter of a mile before the lookout). To reach the falls take Ma'alo Road, hwy 583, out of Lihu’e, and follow the road for about 10 minutes.

Wailua River

Wailua River

The Wailua River flows from Mt. Wai‘ale‘ale, one of the wettest spots on the planet and flows westwards for just 20 miles before reaching the coast. There’s enough rain to make the river the only navigable river in Hawaii. Boat trips upstream start at the Wailua Marina State Park, and head to the Fern Grotto landing and nature trail, a distance of about a mile. Wailua River is approximately 5 miles up the coast from Nawiliwili.

Po'ipu Beach

Po'ipu Beach

On a showery day, your best bet for a beach outing is to head for Kauai’s south shore to Po’ipu, whose beach boasts the best weather on the island. Po’ipu Beach has plenty of amenities like restrooms, showers, lifeguards and picnic tables. Po’ipu is about 10 miles south west of the cruise port.

Kee Beach

Kee Beach

Kee Beach is the last beach accessible by car on the Kuhio Highway, which winds its way west along the North shoreline of the island. The beach is protected by an offshore coral reef, so there's excellent snorkeling in the clear blue waters of the lagoon. At the western end of the beach stand the first cliffs of the famed Na Pali coastline. Keen hikers can sample the celebrated Kalalau Trail which contours under the cliffs by walking the first two miles to Hanakapiai Beach. Kee Beach is a drive of about 90 minutes from Nawiliwili.
